Beyond Load Balancing: NetScaler Security
Protecting Applications, APIs, Identity, DNS and Enterprise AI
NetScaler has long been associated with application delivery, load balancing and secure remote access with a constantly evolving range of security capabilities now extending across web applications, APIs, identity services, DNS infrastructure and emerging enterprise AI workloads.
For organisations already using NetScaler, this creates an opportunity to address multiple security requirements through a common platform. Capabilities including Web Application Firewall (WAF), Bot Management, API Gateway, AI Gateway and DNS Security can be combined with established traffic management and authentication controls to strengthen protection while reducing operational complexity, anywhere on the hybrid cloud footprint.
Web Application Firewall: Application-Layer Protection
Web applications remain a significant target for cyberattacks, particularly where services are internet-facing or process sensitive information. Traditional network firewalls cannot always identify malicious activity embedded within legitimate HTTP and HTTPS requests.
NetScaler WAF addresses these risks through application-layer inspection, combining signature-based detection with positive security controls that validate expected application behaviour. Security checks can identify SQL injection, cross-site scripting, command injection, cookie manipulation and malicious file uploads, while security policies validate URLs, HTTP methods, form fields and request content.
With both inbound and outbound traffic passing through the appliance, NetScaler is able to inspect application responses for sensitive information, helping identify potential data exposure like credit card numbers or PID. Having the ability to redact sensitive information on the fly at wire speed can be particularly useful for legacy or business-critical applications where vulnerabilities cannot always be remediated easily on the application software.
Because WAF is integrated into NetScaler’s single pass traffic processing architecture, organisations can introduce application security alongside existing load balancing, SSL/TLS processing and content switching without necessarily deploying a separate security proxy or sacrificing service performance.
API Gateway: Securing Application Integrations
APIs connect enterprise applications, mobile services, cloud platforms and external partners, but their growing importance has also made them attractive targets for malicious actors seeking access to sensitive data or business functionality, either as a direct or through a trusted supply chain route. NetScaler API Gateway provides a controlled entry point for API traffic, allowing organisations to apply authentication, authorisation, rate limiting and traffic management policies before requests reach backend services.
API protection can be extended through WAF inspection and schema validation. NetScaler supports importing OpenAPI specifications and validating requests against expected endpoints, methods, parameters and data formats, helping identify malformed or unexpected API requests.
Combining API Gateway with WAF and Bot Management enables organisations to address malicious payloads, unauthorised access and excessive automated consumption through complementary controls. This provides a more consistent approach to securing APIs across hybrid application environments.
AI Gateway: Governance for Enterprise AI
Enterprise adoption of generative AI introduces security and operational requirements that differ from traditional application traffic. Organisations are connecting internal applications to multiple large language models, AI services and autonomous agents, often without consistent visibility into how those services are accessed. NetScaler AI Gateway extends the platform’s traffic management and security capabilities to AI workloads, providing a central enforcement point between enterprise applications and model providers.
Rather than allowing applications to connect independently to external AI services, organisations can route supported model traffic through NetScaler to apply access controls, model routing policies, traffic limits, and monitoring. Prompt and response schema can be defined to ensure governance guardrails for approved usage including shadow AI identification and control at both the human and agentic level.
Token-aware rate limiting provides additional control over AI consumption at the user and team level, helping organisations manage usage policy, assign costs to individual teams and reduce the risk of unexpected invoices for over utilisation. Centralising model access further improves visibility across distributed AI resources while enabling consistent security policies and governance across different AI providers.
Securing Autonomous Agents with MCP Gateway
As enterprise AI evolves beyond conversational interfaces, autonomous agents are increasingly being given access to business applications, databases and external tools. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) provides a standardised method for connecting AI agents to these services, but also introduces security risks involving unauthorised actions, data exposure and excessive resource consumption.
NetScaler MCP Gateway provides a centralised control layer between AI agents and MCP servers. Authentication handling, server access policies, tool-level controls and rate limiting help organisations govern which services agents can access and how those services are used. This extends NetScaler’s established approach to application security into agent-to-tool communication, supporting the governance requirements of emerging enterprise AI deployments.
NetScaler Gateway: Protecting Identity and Remote Access
Authentication services remain an important target for cyberattacks, particularly where remote access infrastructure is exposed to the internet. Password spraying, credential stuffing and brute-force attempts can place pressure on authentication systems while increasing the risk of account compromise. These attacks may be distributed across multiple accounts or source addresses, making conventional account lockout policies insufficient on their own.
NetScaler provides complementary controls for strengthening authentication security. Advanced authentication policies, including nFactor, support multi-factor authentication and integration with enterprise identity providers, while authorisation policies restrict access according to defined requirements.
Responder policies, rate limiting and IP reputation controls can help mitigate automated authentication attacks. WAF protection can also be applied to supported Gateway and authentication endpoints, introducing application-aware inspection and additional request controls.Combining these capabilities enables organisations to strengthen Gateway security without relying on a single protective mechanism.

Bot Management and IP Reputation
Automated traffic can create significant security and operational risks, particularly where attackers abuse legitimate application functions. Credential stuffing, scraping, automated account creation and excessive API requests can affect application availability without necessarily exploiting conventional vulnerabilities. NetScaler Bot Management provides mechanisms for identifying suspicious automated behaviour and applying appropriate controls. These can be combined with WAF, rate limiting and application-specific policies to reduce unwanted automation.
IP reputation adds another layer by allowing traffic decisions to consider the reputation or classification of source addresses. Together, these capabilities support more granular security enforcement based on the nature of the request, its source and the application being accessed.
DNS Security: Protecting Critical Infrastructure
DNS is fundamental to application availability, yet its role in enterprise security is often underestimated. DNS infrastructure can be targeted through denial-of-service attacks, manipulated to redirect traffic or exploited as part of malicious communications.
NetScaler provides DNS security capabilities aligned with several objectives of NIST SP 800-81 Rev. 3, including DNSSEC, encrypted DNS, infrastructure resilience and security monitoring.
Native DNSSEC functionality helps protect authoritative DNS information, while DNS Security Profiles provide controls against high-volume queries and random-subdomain attacks. Support for DNS over HTTPS and DNS over TLS allows organisations to introduce encryption into supported DNS architectures.
NetScaler can also load balance recursive DNS infrastructure, apply DNS-aware health monitoring and forward DNS query logs to security monitoring platforms. Combined with validating recursive resolvers and appropriate threat intelligence, these capabilities support a broader Protective DNS architecture.
TLS Security, Traffic Protection and Resilience
NetScaler’s security capabilities extend into the transport and network layers, where SSL/TLS processing, traffic policies and infrastructure resilience play important roles. Centralised TLS termination allows organisations to apply consistent cryptographic configurations(including post Quantum safe cryptography), manage certificates and control supported protocol and cipher-suite settings. Responder and Rewrite policies provide additional flexibility for enforcing HTTP security requirements and controlling application traffic.
Connection controls, rate limiting and traditional traffic management features still play a role in reducing the impact of abusive requests or sudden traffic increases that present themselves with DoS or DDoS characteristics. With all of this security functionality and awareness built in to the same platform that’s managing connection requests, high availability, load balancing and GSLB further complement these protections by helping maintain application access during service attacks.
Security Visibility with NetScaler Console
As organisations extend NetScaler security capabilities across more applications, centralised management becomes increasingly valuable. NetScaler Console provides visibility into supported application delivery and security functions, including WAF events, application performance, infrastructure health and security analytics.
For WAF deployments, learning and recommendation capabilities assist with policy tuning, helping administrators distinguish legitimate application behaviour from potential threats. Centralised configuration management and automation can also improve consistency across larger NetScaler environments.
The benefit is a more manageable security architecture where protection, monitoring and operational governance can be applied consistently rather than maintained independently across individual appliances.
