What is Numecent?

Modern application delivery for Citrix environments. Separating applications from the desktop image.

For many organisations, modernising the digital workspace isn’t really a desktop problem. It’s an application problem. Moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11, refreshing a Citrix environment, adopting Citrix DaaS or moving workloads between on-premises infrastructure and public cloud can all be relatively straightforward until the application estate enters the conversation.

Legacy applications, bespoke software, complex dependencies and applications that simply weren’t designed for modern or multi-session Windows environments can quickly turn a desktop transformation into a much larger project. This is where Numecent comes in.

Numecent provides application containerisation and application management technology designed to separate Windows applications from the underlying desktop image. For Citrix customers, that creates an interesting opportunity: rather than continually rebuilding desktop images around applications, applications can increasingly be packaged once, managed centrally and dynamically delivered into the Citrix environment when users need them.

So, what is Numecent?

The easiest way to understand Numecent is to separate those two components.

Cloudpaging is the application container technology. It packages Windows applications into containers, abstracting much of the application from the underlying Windows operating system. Unlike approaches based entirely on application isolation, Cloudpaging can determine how individual application files and registry components should interact with the operating system. This is designed to improve compatibility for complex Windows applications while reducing conflicts between the application, operating system and other applications.

Cloudpager is the management and orchestration layer. It provides the cloud-native control plane through which IT teams can publish, provision, update, roll back, meter and manage applications across Windows desktops. It supports Cloudpaging containers alongside technologies including MSIX and App-V.

Put the two together and the objective is simple: package applications centrally and make them available wherever the user needs them, rather than permanently installing every application into every desktop image.

For organisations running Citrix at scale, that’s potentially a significant change to the operating model.

Why is Numecent interesting for Citrix customers?

A traditional Citrix environment can accumulate multiple images because different groups of users require different combinations or versions of applications. Over time, those images need patching, testing and maintaining. A relatively small application change can trigger an image update, testing cycle and desktop provisioning process. Numecent changes that relationship by decoupling applications from the base image.

Cloudpaging containers can be dynamically provisioned into Citrix desktops and session hosts rather than being permanently installed within the base image. Numecent also provides native integration with Citrix Studio, allowing Cloudpaging containers to be published into Citrix environments using familiar Citrix management workflows. The result can be fewer images, less application-related image maintenance and a much more flexible approach to application lifecycle management.

Numecent highlights a global banking and financial services organisation that achieved a single base image for more than 100,000 Citrix VDI users using this approach. That’s where the technology becomes particularly interesting at enterprise scale.

Applications without the traditional image lifecycle

The ability to separate application change from desktop change is arguably one of the most valuable aspects of the technology. An application or patch can be provisioned into an active Citrix user session without necessarily requiring the user to log out or the underlying desktop image to be rebuilt. Updates can also be rolled back without reverting the entire desktop image.

This gives IT teams much finer control. Instead of:

application change → image update → testing → desktop reprovisioning → user disruption the model becomes much closer to:

application change → application deployment

That can shorten application release cycles while reducing the operational impact associated with maintaining large numbers of Citrix images.

Solving the legacy application problem

Application compatibility is another important part of the story. Many organisations would like to accelerate Windows 11, Citrix DaaS or wider cloud transformation projects but remain constrained by applications developed for older Windows environments. Rewriting those applications can be expensive. Replacing them may not be practical. Keeping an ageing desktop platform alive simply to support them introduces another set of security and operational challenges.

Cloudpaging is designed specifically to help address these scenarios. Numecent says its technology can accommodate legacy installers, applications requiring compatibility mode and software dependent upon obsolete operating system components. This can give organisations another migration option: modernise the desktop without necessarily modernising every application first. That’s an important distinction. It allows the application transformation programme and desktop transformation programme to move at different speeds.

What does Numecent ultimately solve?

The real value isn’t simply “application packaging”. It’s reducing the dependency between applications, operating systems and desktop infrastructure. That can mean fewer Citrix images to maintain, faster application updates, easier rollback, improved support for legacy applications and a more consistent approach to delivering software across physical, virtual and cloud desktops.

There can also be an infrastructure benefit. By removing application-specific dependencies from individual session hosts, organisations can potentially make better use of a common pool of Citrix resources rather than maintaining separate silos for particular application sets. Numecent argues this can improve server-to-user density and reduce desktop run costs. For IT teams already reviewing how to get more value from their Citrix investment, that makes Numecent particularly relevant.

A different way to think about Citrix application delivery

Citrix has always provided organisations with powerful ways to securely deliver applications and desktops to users. Numecent addresses a different part of the problem: how those Windows applications are packaged, maintained and made available inside the desktop environment in the first place.

Together, the technologies create the potential for a much more application-centric operating model. Citrix provides the secure digital workspace, brokering, HDX experience and desktop infrastructure. Numecent helps separate applications from that infrastructure so they can be packaged, updated and managed on their own lifecycle.

For organisations with hundreds or thousands of Windows applications, multiple Citrix images, complex legacy dependencies or a significant Windows 11 and cloud transformation programme ahead of them, that’s a capability worth investigating.
