Get Set for Citrix LAS

If you’re running on premises deployments of Citrix whether that’s Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD), NetScaler (ADC/Console), XenServer, or other legacy Citrix components, you need to read on. On 8 September 2025, Citrix published License Activation Service (LAS) as the successor to file based licensing. File based licensing is now officially deprecated: after 15 April 2026, legacy license files will be unsupported and no longer accepted.

Why Citrix LAS, and why now?

Citrix’s on premises licensing landscape is shifting. For years, organisations have managed license files, issuing them through the MyCitrix portal, uploading to license servers or NetScaler consoles, and renewing manually whenever terms changed. This has created friction: manual processes, slipped renewals, and operational overhead.

LAS removes that burden with a modern, cloud based licensing solution. Once your License Server (or NetScaler Console) is registered with Citrix Cloud, activations happen automatically. There’s no longer a need to juggle license keys, download files, or track per server license files per host/model. Simple.

From day one, Citrix designed LAS to reduce complexity, improve scalability and minimise manual effort. It’s a technology transformation, the contracts and entitlements remain unchanged but the way licences are consumed becomes far more resilient and streamlined.

Who is affected and who isn’t?

This change only impacts on premises Citrix deployments. If you’re exclusively using Citrix’s cloud based offerings (e.g. Citrix Cloud, DaaS, Gateway Service), LAS doesn’t affect you.

Affected environments include:

    • Citrix License Server (on premises) itself.
    • CVAD (on premises), including Delivery Controllers, VDAs, Studio/Web Studio, etc.
    • NetScaler ADCs, SVMs and on premises console deployments (when version requirements are met).
    • XenServer, and other on premises components that currently rely on file based licensing.

If you run a hybrid environment (some cloud, some on premises), only the on premises portion requires migration.

What must you do and by when

To keep your Citrix environment running smoothly with uninterrupted licensing, here’s what you need to do:

    1. Check version compatibility. Ensure your License Server is at least build 11.17.2, and that your CVAD, NetScaler, XenServer or other components are on a LAS compatible version.
    2. Register with Citrix Cloud. Log into licensing manager, navigate to the “License Activation Service” tab, and register your License Server (or NetScaler Console) with your Citrix Cloud Org ID.
    3. Update license handling. Point your Citrix products to the LAS enabled License Server so that activations happen automatically. Legacy file based license files can no longer be relied upon post deadline.
    4. Test and monitor. After migration, confirm that entitlements are correctly synced and that sessions/apps launch as expected. Also ensure your network and firewall allow outbound HTTPS to LAS endpoints (otherwise licenses won’t renew).

What happens if you do nothing?

The hard cut-off date is April 15th 2026. After that point, legacy licensing becomes unsupported, meaning failure to migrate will result in Citrix components not recognising licenses (and potentially failing to launch apps, desktops, or services).

Be aware that Easter falls on April 5th, which often brings team disruption and change freeze for a couple of weeks so plan to be compliant by the end of March 2026 at the latest. You can read more on the Citrix support pages.

What Citrix LAS offers and what to watch out for

Benefits you’ll see

    • Eliminates manual license file management, no more downloads, uploads, or re-issues.
    • Automatic license activation and renewal post entitlement, your License Server talks to LAS and keeps entitlements fresh.
    • Simplified, scalable licensing with fewer moving parts, fewer errors and less operational overhead.

What to plan for

    • Your infrastructure now depends on connectivity to Citrix Cloud (or at least periodic check-ins). If connectivity is lost for more than the grace period, activation may lapse.
    • Legacy license models (especially some older NetScaler licences, pooled vCPU, perpetual licences) may not be supported under LAS, you may need to discuss a new licensing model at renewal.
    • Air gapped or strictly offline environments will need an exception approved by Citrix prior to the April deadline, be sure to have a request in the system before the end of January, or sooner if you can.
